Hip CAR

Hip CARs or controlled articular rotations are circular motions of the hip trying to achieve the end-range of the hip. Stand on one leg (can use an object to help balance if needed), using the floating leg bring the leg across the body squeezing the legs together. After, bring the knee up to the chest and then out towards the side. Followed by internal rotation of the hip and bringing the leg back and around finishing by squeezing the knee together.

How to perform:

Hip CAR

CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) are fantastic mobilization drills for the hip. They also help improve balance and strengthen the foot and glutes.  During the entire movement, it is slow and controlled; there is nothing fast about it. The movement will test to see the mobility of the hips and areas that can be worked on. To start balance on one leg or use something to help balance and bring the knee across the body to the opposite hip squeezing the legs together. From there drive the knee up as high as possible bringing it to the front of the body. Now keep bringing the knee higher as it is brought to the outside of the body. From there try to keep the knee up and internally rotate the hip to end range of motion, not arching the back keeping a neutral spine. Bring the leg back and around until the knees are touching and squeezing them together. Now externally rotate the hip, and since there is the other leg in the way, bring the externally rotated leg in front of the other and start from the beginning. During the entire movement keep a neutral or slightly flexed spine and make sure not to extend the spine in any position.

Protocol:

Complete 1x per side performing for 1-2 minutes or 3-5 full rotations
