Occipivot

Laying on an occipivot (positioned on the sub occipital muscles), tuck the chin and hold, getting the deep cervical muscles to contract. Can rotate the head back and forth if one side is tighter than the other.

Occipivot

How to perform:

Occipivot

To find the correct placement, first feel the back of the head with the fingers. Make the way down towards the base of the skull and should feel a transition from bone to muscle on either side of the spine. The "fingers" of the occipivot should be placed directly on the muscular portion just below the base of the skull. The first few times using an occipivot, the placement should be done by a professional to make sure you have sufficient understanding before trying it yourself. Make sure the placement isn't too low on the neck so it doesn't extend the neck.

Once in position, tuck the chin backward towards the collarbone, not towards the chest. The contraction should be felt in the deep cervical flexors on the front of the neck. This movement  should put a stretch on the sub occipitals, which are pinned down by the occipivot. This is also effective through a neurological process known as reciprocal inhibition: as the muscles on the front of the neck contract, the opposing muscles on the back of the neck relax to accommodate.

Protocol:

Complete 1x holding for 5-10 minutes
