Shoulder CAR

To do this controlled articular rotation, extend the arm, bring it across the body, and slowly start moving it up. Once overhead, start moving the arm backwards while turning the thumb down. Keep pulling the arm back and down until it rests at the beginning point by the side.

Shoulder CAR

How to perform:

Shoulder CAR

A controlled articular rotation or CAR is a movement that brings a joint through active stretch in full end-range ROM. Finding and focusing on the areas in the ROM that feel the most restrictive is beneficial because it is an active, rather than passive, stretch. CARs are excellent at training and teaching the muscles around the joint to allow a higher ROM while also increasing the strength and stability of the joint while it is in its most vulnerable positions.

For the shoulder CAR the arm should be fully extended throughout the entire movement. Start with the arm by the side and move across the body slowly, reaching to the other side. From here the arm is across the body and the bicep should almost wipe across the face until the arm is fully extended overhead. Now the arm should start to rotate behind the body. As the arm gets further and back keep reaching back, putting the arm in the full ROM that it can. Also, as the arm starts going back the hand should rotate from having the thumb facing upward to the thumb facing downward. Once back at the starting position a full shoulder CAR has been completed. Take note that the arm should be fully extended and controlled the entire time.

Modifications can be done by pinning a ball in the elbow and squeezing the bicep tight. From there thinking the elbows cretes a big circle. Start with it going straight up, then out to the side, followed by the hand rotating down adn teh hand gooing behind the back. Go in reserve to get back to the start.

Protocol:

Complete 1x per side performing for 1-2 minutes or 3-5 full rotations
